Why DIY?

Let’s face it; cats can be notoriously picky eaters. Commercial cat treats often come with a laundry list of ingredients, some of which might raise an eyebrow or two. That’s why I started experimenting with homemade vegan treats for my cat, Mr. Whiskers.

Recipe 1: Sweet Potato Delights

Ingredients:

  • 1 sweet potato
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Peel and slice the sweet potato into thin rounds.
  3. Toss the slices in melted coconut oil until coated.
  4. Arrange on a baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until they become crispy.
  5. Cool completely before serving.

Mr. Whiskers took to these sweet potato delights like a cat to a sunbeam. The crunchiness seemed to be a hit, and I felt good knowing exactly what went into his treats.

Recipe 2: Lentil Crunchers

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup cooked lentils
  • 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°F (163°C).
  2. Mix cooked lentils, nutritional yeast, and olive oil in a bowl.
  3. Drop small spoonfuls onto a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  4. Bake for 12-15 minutes until they firm up.
  5. Cool completely before serving.

The lentil crunchers quickly became a favorite. Nutritional yeast adds a cheesy flavor that cats seem to adore, and lentils provide a protein boost.

Recipe 3: Catnip Biscuits

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup oat flour
  • 2 tablespoons dried catnip
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Mix oat flour and catnip in a bowl.
  3. Add applesauce and water, stirring until a dough forms.
  4. Roll out the dough and cut into small biscuit shapes.
  5. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges turn golden brown.
  6. Cool completely before serving.

These catnip biscuits brought out the playful side in Mr. Whiskers. It’s a treat and a bit of entertainment rolled into one.
