But what&#8217;s the real story?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So, there was this story last week about a group of dogs in Northern China who had escaped from a truck after being stolen by dog meat traders.<\/p>\n<p>The whole world gasped in awe at the group! I did too. We all did.<br \/>\nBut, alas&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The reality is not as heroic.<\/p>\n<p>As the video below explains, the dogs were not stolen. They had simply wondered off. None of the dogs were neutered. And it&#8217;s not the first time. In fact, it is quite common. There are entire channels of fake soppy stories produced to get clicks, pull at heart strings, get likes, donations and make a lot of money from YouTube ads.<\/p>\n<p>On one hand, these fake stories take the audience away from genuine rescues who desperately need attention. YouTube does indeed have a problem with fake rescues and fake stories.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, such videos produced for a Chinese audience are driving more and more public outrage over how animals are treated in China. This is huge!<\/p>\n<p>Attitudes are indeed changing in China. And this increased attention to animal welfare in China is forcing, albeit slowly, changes in governance.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the dog meat trade is still legal in some provinces. Some have already banned it and are introducing new laws to prosecute animal abuse.<\/p>\n<p>No doubt, these videos help. This story proves it.<\/p>\n<p>Another issue is highlighted in the story &#8211; animals are rarely neutered in provincial China.
