The hatching of the rarest ducklings on earth.
\nHi everyone we\u2019re back with a wonderful story about three ducklings of a species that has almost gone extinct.
\nEver since I was a little boy, ducklings have been my first love.
\nSo I was thrilled when I got the chance to get some precious rare eggs to incubate and help to protect a once famous duck species from vanishing for good.
\nThe Anas Curvirostra \u2013 The Hook Bill
\nIt was capable of producing over 300 eggs a year and had a funny appearance with its curved beak.
\nOnce there were millions of this ducks and now there are only about 80 good (well formed) egg laying female ducks of the Hook Bill left.
\nI got in contact with a man that is trying to keep the species alive.
\nWe discussed that giving this duck some attention and telling its story could maybe help.
\nI have learned a lot from him and I was also happy to share my 30+ years of experience in incubating and raising ducklings.<\/p>\n

\nAbout one hundred years ago
\nDuck eggs were more important than chicken eggs
\nOne kind of duck in particular was famous for its egg production
\nAnd its funny appearance\u2026
\nThe Hook Bill
\nOnce, there were millions of them
\nNow, all those ducks are gone
\nExcept for about 80 egg laying female ducks
\nTo me that is sad
\nSo I visited a man much like myself
\nAnd offered my help in trying to save\u2026
\nThe species from going extinct
\nI got four rare and precious eggs to put in my incubator
\nDuck eggs need special treatment
\nThey need to breathe and cool down 10 minutes a day
\nIn three of them\u2026
\nLife started
\nExactly as planned, after 28 days I could hear the first one\u2026
\nThat night
\nNow IF she is a she, she will be of real importance to her species
\nShe will be one of the ast 80 (and now +1 \ud83d\ude42 survivors
\nI was very excited
\nFor a duckling this rare I had never seen before
\nUnder a mother duck\u2026
\nThe egg would be crushed a little, which helps the duckling to hatch
\nShe was clearly exhausted
\nYet her sound was strong and relaxed
\nOutside the incubator, I always keep them warm with my breath
\nHello little friend
\nThe next morning the second one hatched
\nYeeee\u2026 a yellow one
\nHmmmm, better keep her with me some more
\nAn hour later it was almost dry
\nWhilst the first two were going as planned
\nI thought the third one would be fine as well\u2026
\nWhen it was hatching, I thought everything was alright
\nAnd still I thought everything was fine
\nI even thought it was funny how much she matched my beard
\n\u2026but then I noticed\u2026
\nThis I had seen before\u2026
\nHer balance was not functioning
\nOh no!
\nShe would not be able to walk or eat
\nThis means her chance of survival were close to zero
\nBut I\u2019ve been taking care of ducklings\u2026for 30 years
\nIf I can fixate her for one whole night
\nShe has a small chance her balance recovers
\nThe next morning\u2026fingers crossed
\nI\u2019m sorry I just can\u2019t always fix it\u2026
\nSo far so good
\nNow\u2026.please, please be able to walk
\nHere we go little friends
\nTime for some fresh food
\nThree weeks later<\/p>\n
