Khanyisa & the Jabulani herd females (and Fishan) meet
A meeting of elephants, big and small
🐘 We wanted to share this video of the first introduction with you so that you can feel as though you were there beside us… Let’s go back to that first day, at the barrier, when the female elephants in the herd, together with Fishan, met baby Khanyisa up close 💕 Here you can see Tokwe (the herd Matriarch), Limpopo, Pisa and Fishan as well as the two rescued orphans that were previously introduced into and accepted by the loving trunks of the Jabulani herd: Kumbura and little Timisa.
It’s such a special moment that has stayed with us ever since. We are starting to slowly introduce Khanyisa to the Jabulani herd. It is not a quick process as we need to monitor both Khanyisa and the herd to ensure they are not stressed out or overwhelmed. Baby steps are the way to go.
This first day of introductions began with Khanyisa and the herd meeting – with the barrier still between them, but closer together and at a spot near to the herd’s stables.
We began with giving Khanyisa milk close to the fence. As she drank her milk, a group of females from the herd rumbled and came over, together with Fishan, to greet her! Curiously and calmly, the herd proceeded to smell our little baby and Khanyisa returned the sentiment and sniffed them out closer than ever!
