Adine discovers Khanyisa’s new baby tusk

As a growing young calf, little Khanyisa is developing all sorts of new bits and bobs and traits. Recently, Adine Roode, Founder of HERD, discovered Khanyisa’s growing baby tusk!

Baby elephants are born with milk tusks which fall out and are replaced by permanent tusks between six and 12 months of age. As Khanyisa’s baby tusks grow, we can really feel them beneath the surface in the mouth. In elephants, tusks are essentially elongated incisors. One third of them is embedded deep inside the elephant’s head.
