A third successful encounter between orphaned albino elephant calf Khanyisa and her future mom Lundi, with Jabulani in their company too. As soon as Khanyisa saw the two big elephants in the early morning, she ran anxiously to them. Lundi welcomed her excitedly and vocally and quickly moved her leg aside for access for Khanyisa. It was beautiful to see how fast they settled down together.
Lundi is slowly becoming used to the idea of another baby needing her love and continues to instinctively move her leg to provide her with the space Khanyisa needs to access her teat.
At one stage Khanyisa approached Jabulani to suckle, who first moved his leg to block her, but then realised and made way for her to explore his underbelly. It did not take long for Khanyisa to realise she needed to swap over to Lundi to find a teat!
Overall it was a successful morning, and we are happy with what we have seen so far. Everything is calm, and it is beautiful to hear Lundi and Khanyisa communicating.
Elephant carers Kevin and Clever shared some insights and their feelings with Adine at the end of the clip.
