Khanyisa greeted the Jabulani herd with a little stumble-and-a-tumble as she anxiously ran to join them. This caused quite the morning fuss as the elephants rushed over to check on her, including Somopane, one of the older bulls, too! Little Khanyisa was unharmed, and so the day started!
You will see some lovely and lengthy clips of her time in the wild. She spent a lot of her morning with Bubi and Kumbura, but Lundi and Tokwe always keep a close eye.
During Khanyisa’s bottle time with Herman, Tokwe kept close as she usually does. However, on this occasion, Kumbura kept by Khanyisa’s side.
Kumbura is a very nervous young elephant around humans (and elephants too at times). A rescued orphan herself, she has always shown her hesitance in uncomfortable or unusual situations. We will share more about her story soon.
Adine decided to see if Kumbura would like to taste Khanyisa’s milk, as she has done already with Tokwe and Lundi, seeing that she was curious about Khanyisa’s milk feeding. Kumbura almost took some but decided against it. Tigers then dripped a little for her to smell better on the ground and proceeded to offer some to Bubi who gladly accepted, and seemed to approve. We always respect each elephant’s space and individual needs, as just like humans, they each have their own personality.
The herd then continued to browse and forage together harmoniously, and soon Khanyisa returned to the orphanage as they enjoyed the rest of their day in the bush.
Look out for a lovely clip of the dominant bull Sebakwe, with the sun rising behind him!
