Adine has come across a few clips of Khanyisa’s early days at the orphanage that we had never seen let alone shared with you before!
Here is a moment in February 2020, one month after the calf arrived at HERD, still with her snare wounds quite prominent across the top of her head, ear and cheeks.
She showed a great love for water from the very beginning and took to splashing about in her garden pool with glee as she got more comfortable with her new surroundings. She settled in well from the beginning and showed her natural confidence in exploring the world. We kept her warm with blankets which called for several blanket changes across the day as she muddied, wet or dirtied one.
Her green blanket helped her through a joyous mud bath as you can see here – with her skin well covered in mud from the orphanage garden, as the team helped get her used to a few elephant behaviours.
Changing her blanket proved an arduous task as the busy-body was never still for long. Her skin was itchy and dry from her days alone in the wild, with the snare restricting her movements and giving her great pain. We took to rubbing not only mud but also aqueous cream on her dry spots to protect her sensitive skin.
You can see her scratching her feet, legs and head against hard objects in the garden while the team (carer Liverson, Adine and HERD Operations Manager, Juan) change her into a new fresh blanket, with the mud helping to cool and soothe her skin.
Watch as she runs off with a branch and gives a little trunk greeting over the fence! Thank you for following her little journey from 2020 to today!
