KindBunch posted in the group Pets with Dementia
Welcome everyone. The photos you see are of Bob. He is the inspiration for this group. Bob had dementia. For the last 3 years of his life, his human family watched with sadness as they progressively lost their boy to dementia.
For him, not much changed in his mind, I believe. He was still playful. He loved his walks and he loved barking at everyone. We know he was content because, despite his condition and regular confusion, he never stopped collecting his beloved rocks which he carefully tucked in the far corner of his bed.
In his last year, he lost his sight too. And then he lost his hearing. That proved harder for our old boy. We could tell. He was more confused even at home and he sought us out less, preferring to remain in his little corner of the room in peace.
For his human family it was tough. And we’re talking about 2011, the year Bob died, when information for pet parents dealing with this condition was just non existent.
So, this is why this group has come to life. As a tribute to our best boy Bob and for all other pets living with dementia. As pet parents, it’s tough to know how to support our pets. And this is where I hope this group can help. By bringing together pet parents, we can share our experiences and, hopefully, make our lives and our pets’ lives more comfortable.
There is a forum anyone is welcome to participate in too for us to discuss food, medication, exercise, the emotional turmoil, etc.
Bob died peacefully in his sleep at 13, almost 14, in 2011. His human family gave him all the comfort and love he needed. And we will never ever forget our sweet, funny boy.
